A CPAP is the one device where “it ran out at 3 a.m.” isn’t an inconvenience — it’s the whole reason you bought the battery. Sizing therefore starts from your actual machine settings, not the brand’s “runs a CPAP for X nights” claim, which is always measured in the most favourable configuration: humidifier off, running on DC.

That claim isn’t quite a lie. It’s just describing a setup most people don’t use.

The humidifier is the battery-killer#

Two settings changes worth more than a bigger battery#

Use the DC converter cable. ResMed and Philips both sell 12V/24V DC kits for their machines. Running from the power station’s DC socket bypasses the inverter entirely — you keep the 15% that AC conversion costs you, and the machine runs cooler and quieter. This is the single biggest efficiency win available and most people never take it. Check voltage and polarity against your specific model before buying a cable.

Turn the humidifier off, or run passover. The heated humidifier and heated hose are resistive heating elements — they consume far more than the blower motor ever does. Many machines offer a “passover” mode that humidifies without heating, at a fraction of the draw. At a campsite in humid conditions you may not miss it at all; in a dry cabin in winter you will.

If you medically need the humidifier — some people do, and dry airway irritation is a real reason people abandon therapy — then budget for it honestly: 500–700 Wh per night and buy accordingly. Don’t let a sizing guide talk you out of a setting your sleep depends on.

For outage backup, pass-through beats capacity#

If the machine is your reason for owning a power station at home, the feature that matters most isn’t watt-hours — it’s UPS or pass-through mode.

The unit sits permanently plugged into the wall with the CPAP plugged into it. Grid power flows through to the machine and keeps the battery topped up. When the grid drops, the unit switches to battery in around 10 milliseconds — fast enough that the CPAP never reboots and you never wake up.

Without pass-through, an outage at 2 a.m. means waking up, finding the power station in the dark, and plugging in. That’s the entire difference.

Airline note: this unit is 288 Wh, and airlines generally cap lithium batteries in the cabin at 100 Wh without approval, with 101–160 Wh allowed by prior arrangement. No power station in this guide can fly, checked or carry-on. For air travel you need a purpose-built CPAP battery under 100 Wh, or you arrange power at your destination. This is the most common expensive mistake in this category.

Best for outage duty — BLUETTI AC180#

The most capacity in the 1 kWh class, which matters when the humidifier stays on: 1,152 Wh is just under two nights at full AC draw with heating. It’s 35.3 lbs and not really portable, but a home outage unit doesn’t need to be — and while it’s running your CPAP it can also keep a fridge and phones alive.

Do you want a power station or a dedicated CPAP battery?#

These are different products and the distinction matters more here than in any other use case.

A dedicated CPAP battery (Medistrom Pilot, ResMed Power Station) is purpose- built: it’s typically 90–100 Wh, weighs two or three pounds, connects directly to the machine’s DC input, and — crucially — is under the 100 Wh airline limit, so it flies. It runs one or two nights and does nothing else.

A portable power station is 300–2,000 Wh, weighs 8–35 lbs, runs your phone and your fridge and your laptop as well, and cannot fly. It’s a household and vehicle device.

What to check on your own machine#

Don’t take the table above as gospel for your setup. Two ways to get your real number:

  1. The manual. Most CPAP manuals list power consumption in watts, usually with separate figures for the blower and the humidifier. ResMed publishes typical and maximum consumption for the AirSense series.
  2. A plug-in energy meter. $20, left on the machine overnight, gives you your consumption at your pressure setting and your humidity level — which is the only number that really applies to you.

What else to look for#

  • Pure sine wave inverter. Every unit in our database is pure sine. Cheap generic inverters often aren’t, and some medical power supplies handle modified sine poorly.
  • Quiet at low load. Fans spin up under heavy draw, not at CPAP-level loads. Any of these units running a 12 W CPAP will be effectively silent — the noise concern is real but only if you’re also running a heavy load.
  • LiFePO4 chemistry, if the unit doubles as storm-prep gear. It holds charge for months in storage and survives thousands of cycles.
  • A 12V/DC output matching your converter, if you’re going the DC route.

How many nights will my machine actually get?#

Work it out in three steps rather than trusting anyone’s table, including ours.

1. Find your machine’s real draw. ResMed publishes typical and peak consumption for the AirSense series in the clinical manual; Philips does the same for DreamStation. If you can’t find it, a $20 plug-in meter overnight gives you a better number than any spec sheet, because it reflects your pressure setting and your humidity level.

2. Multiply by your hours. Eight hours is the usual assumption, but use your own. A machine used six hours a night uses 25% less than the tables here assume.

3. Divide the usable capacity by that figure.

A worked example, ResMed AirSense running 12 W on DC for 7 hours a night, on a 1,024 Wh EcoFlow DELTA 3:

12 W × 7 h  = 84 Wh per night
1,024 × 0.95 = 973 Wh usable
973 ÷ 84     = 11.6 nights

Then take off a margin. Batteries age, cold reduces capacity, and you will sometimes want to charge a phone from the same unit. Planning for 80% of the calculated figure is sensible; planning for 100% of it is how people end up awake at 3 a.m.
