Small power stations look interchangeable on a shelf, and their capacities nearly are: the five units below span 245 to 288 Wh, a 43 Wh spread you will never notice in use. Buying on capacity in this class is a mistake, because capacity is the spec that doesn’t differ.

What differs is the inverter — 300 W on some units, 600 W on others — and that single number decides whether the thing runs an appliance or only charges devices.

Three of these units cost exactly $299. That’s the comparison that matters, and it isn’t close.

The inverter splits this class in two#

Everything here holds roughly the same energy. What separates them is how fast you’re allowed to take it out.

300 W units — RIVER 3, RIVER 2, Explorer 300 Plus. These charge things. Phones, laptops, cameras, a CPAP on DC, LED lighting, a drone battery. Plug in anything with a compressor or a heating element and the inverter refuses, however full the battery is.

600 W units — EB3A, RIVER 3 Plus. These run things, briefly. A 500 W induction burner, a 450 W blender, a 550 W power tool. The 1,200 W surge rating also means a small motor’s startup spike won’t trip them.

The trade is runtime, and the arithmetic is unforgiving. A 268 Wh pack at 85% inverter efficiency gives about 228 Wh of usable output. Draw 600 W and that lasts:

268 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 600 W = 0.38 hours, or about 23 minutes

So the 600 W inverter buys you capability, not endurance. It’s the difference between boiling a cup of water and being unable to.

What each pick gets right — and what it costs you#

EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus — best overall#

The 600 W inverter, 220 W of solar input, a 5-year warranty, and the only expansion battery in the class, taking it from 286 Wh to 858 Wh. That last figure moves it out of this category entirely if you need it to, which nothing else here can do.

The compromise: 10.4 lbs makes it the heaviest unit on the page, and 28 Wh per pound is second-worst. You’re carrying the inverter whether you use it or not.

EcoFlow RIVER 2 — best value#

$239 for 256 Wh, 7.7 lbs, a 60-minute recharge and five years of warranty. Nothing here is cheaper per watt-hour and nothing is lighter.

The compromise: the 300 W inverter and 110 W solar ceiling are both class minimums. This is a device charger, and it is an excellent one.

Jackery Explorer 300 Plus — best to carry#

288 Wh in 8.3 lbs is 35 watt-hours per pound, the best ratio in the class by a clear margin. If it goes in a pack or on a walk-in campsite, this is the one.

The compromise: 120 minutes to recharge is double everything else here, 100 W of solar input is the lowest on the page, and it has a single AC outlet — so two things that need AC means choosing between them.

EcoFlow RIVER 3 — best budget#

$229 buys 245 Wh, LiFePO4 rated to 3,000 cycles, a one-hour recharge and a 5-year warranty. For charging devices on weekend trips, the extra $70 for a 600 W inverter is money most people won’t get back.

The compromise: the least capacity here, and 110 W of solar input caps how fast you can top it up in the field.

What we’d skip, and why#

The BLUETTI EB3A, at MSRP. It’s a capable unit — 600 W continuous, 200 W of solar input, and our full review covers what it does well. The problem is the comparison rather than the product: at $299 it faces the RIVER 3 Plus at the same price, which matches its 600 W inverter and 1,200 W surge and then adds 220 W of solar instead of 200, a 3,000-cycle rating instead of 2,500, expansion to 858 Wh, and a 5-year warranty instead of 2.

Two years of warranty on a product sold on a decade-long battery lifespan is the row to look at twice. The EB3A discounts frequently and often deeply — at a real street price the calculation changes, but we quote MSRP here, and at MSRP it is beaten.

What to look for in a small solar generator#

The bundles branded as solar generators are these same batteries with panels in the box, and in this class the panel side is where the money is wasted. Two checks:

Match the panel to the input ceiling. These units accept 100–220 W. A 200 W panel on an Explorer 300 Plus wastes half its output, because the charge controller caps at 100 W. That’s the most common mistake in small-unit solar.

Expect 60–70% of the rated wattage. A 200 W panel returns roughly 120–140 W across a good day once you account for angle, temperature derating, and the fact that peak sun lasts hours rather than all day. On the RIVER 3 Plus that refills 286 Wh in a bit over two hours of usable sun — genuinely enough to run indefinitely on a summer camping loop.

At this size, solar is what turns a two-day battery into an open-ended one. It is also the reason the RIVER 3 Plus’s 220 W ceiling is worth more than its extra 30 Wh of capacity.
