RV power is a different problem from tent camping, and the guides that treat them together do readers a disservice. The loads are bigger, the trips are longer, weight essentially stops mattering — and there’s one appliance that dominates the entire conversation.

Let’s deal with that one first.

The air conditioner problem#

A portable power station — or a solar generator, same hardware — will not run your RV’s air conditioner for a useful length of time. This is the single most important thing to understand before you spend money.

A 13,500 BTU rooftop unit, the most common size, draws roughly 1,200–1,500 W while running, with a startup surge past 3,000 W. Two consequences:

  • Most units can’t start it at all. You need a 3,000 W-class inverter. Of the units here, only the Jackery Explorer 2000 Plus (3,000 W / 6,000 W surge) and the EcoFlow DELTA Pro (3,600 W / 7,200 W) clear it comfortably.

A soft-start kit (roughly $300, professionally installed) cuts the startup surge substantially and lets smaller inverters start the unit. It does nothing about the running draw, which is what empties the battery.

If air conditioning off-grid is your requirement, the honest answers are a generator, a shore-power site, or a large installed battery bank with 1,000 W+ of roof solar. A portable unit is not the solution, and any guide that implies otherwise is selling you something.

What boondocking actually consumes#

With the air conditioner off, RV loads are manageable and predictable:

Two very different totals fall out depending on your fridge:

Compressor fridge, no Starlink:
324 + 60 + 180 + 360 + 200 + 240 = 1,364 Wh/day
÷ 0.85 = 1,605 Wh

Absorption fridge on electric, with Starlink:
1,400 + 60 + 180 + 360 + 200 + 1,500 + 240 = 3,940 Wh/day
÷ 0.85 = 4,635 Wh

If your RV fridge runs on propane while boondocking, run it on propane. Absorption fridges are wildly inefficient on electricity and switching that one load to gas roughly halves your daily consumption. This is the single biggest lever available to most RVers.

Can you plug it into shore power?#

This is where RV use differs most from camping, and it’s frequently glossed over.

An RV’s shore-power inlet is typically 30A TT-30 (3,600 W) or 50A (12,000 W). Feeding one from a power station means matching that connector:

  • The EcoFlow DELTA Pro has a 30A outlet. Plug it straight into a 30A RV inlet with the right cable and the whole coach is powered — converter, outlets, everything — up to 3,600 W. This is the only unit here that does it.

Power station or upgraded house batteries?#

The honest comparison, since it’s the real alternative:

A portable power station needs no installation, comes indoors during storms, moves to another vehicle, and can be sold on. It’s the right answer up to about 3 kWh, and the only answer if you rent or change rigs.

Installed lithium house batteries with a dedicated inverter/charger are generally cheaper per watt-hour at scale, integrate with the RV’s existing charging (alternator, shore, roof solar), and don’t take up floor space. Beyond about 3 kWh this is usually the better investment.

Many people end up with both: a house bank for the coach, and a portable unit for flexibility and as a backup.

How do you recharge while boondocking?#

An RV has three charging paths a tent camper doesn’t, and using all three is what makes multi-day trips work.

Roof or portable solar. The main one. RV roofs have space that tents don’t — 400–800 W is a realistic array, returning roughly 1,200–2,400 Wh on a clear day at 60–70% of rating. That covers the compressor-fridge boondocking day (1,605 Wh) outright. Check your unit’s maximum solar input first: 1,200 W on the BLUETTI AC200L, 1,400 W on the Jackery Explorer 2000 Plus, 1,600 W on the DELTA Pro. The 2 kWh class can absorb everything a typical RV roof produces.

The alternator, while driving. A DC-DC charger drawing from the engine can put meaningful energy back on a travel day — far more than the 100 W a cigarette-lighter socket manages. If you move sites every two or three days, this alone can cover a large share of your consumption.

Shore power, when you have it. Recharge times differ enough to matter when you’re paying by the night: the DELTA 2 Max fills in 78 minutes, the AC200L in 90, the Explorer 2000 Plus in 102, the DELTA Pro in 108. An hour at a dump station with power can be most of a full battery.

The pattern that works: leave full, run solar daily, and treat travel days as a bonus. Relying on any single path is what leaves people short.

What to skip#

Anything under 1 kWh, for RV use. It won’t cover a day.

Gas generators, unless you need air conditioning. They’re loud enough to carry across a whole boondocking area, increasingly curfewed or banned, can’t run enclosed, and need fuel you have to carry. The case for them is air conditioning and nothing else — but that case is real.

Buying before you measure. RV loads vary more between rigs than any other use case in this category — absorption versus compressor fridge alone is a 1,000 Wh/day swing. Measure yours before choosing.

Can a portable power station run an RV air conditioner?
Briefly, and only the largest units. A 13,500 BTU RV air conditioner draws roughly 1,200–1,500 W running with a startup surge past 3,000 W, so it needs a 3,000 W-class inverter to start at all. Even then a 3,600 Wh battery runs it for only about two hours. For air conditioning off-grid you need a soft-start kit, a large battery bank, and substantial solar — or a generator.
