The fastest way to waste money on a camping power station — or a solar generator, which is the same product sold with panels — is to buy on capacity alone. The second fastest is to buy on brand. What actually decides the right unit for camping is a three-way trade between watt-hours, weight, and whether you can recharge from the sun.

Start with the math, not the model#

Everything follows from one number: watt-hours per day.

daily Wh = Σ (device watts × hours used)
capacity needed = daily Wh × nights ÷ 0.85

The 0.85 is inverter efficiency — a “1,000 Wh” unit delivers roughly 850 Wh at the AC outlet. Three worked examples:

Weekend tent trip, no fridge. Two phones (10 W × 2 × 2 h = 40 Wh), a lantern (5 W × 6 h = 30 Wh), camera batteries (30 Wh), a laptop one evening (60 W × 2 h = 120 Wh) — call it 220 Wh/day. Two nights: 440 ÷ 0.85 = 518 Wh. A 1,000 Wh unit is comfortable; a 300 Wh unit works if you skip the laptop.

Van weekend with a 12V fridge. Fridge (13.5 W average × 24 h = 324 Wh), phones and lights (70 Wh), CPAP on DC (100 Wh) — 494 Wh/day. Two nights: 988 ÷ 0.85 = 1,162 Wh. This is the 1 kWh class, and it’s why that class is the camping default.

Five days boondocking. Same 494 Wh/day × 5 = 2,470 ÷ 0.85 = 2,906 Wh. No portable unit in this guide covers that on battery alone. You either move up to the expandable 2 kWh class and carry panels, or you accept a mid-trip drive to recharge.

Weight is the spec nobody reads#

For camping specifically, weight matters more than the spec sheets suggest, because it decides whether the unit lives in your car or comes to the site.

The compromises are honest ones: 100 minutes to recharge from the wall (versus 56 for the DELTA 3), only 400 W of solar input, and no expansion battery option. For a camper who recharges at home between trips, none of those bite.

Best budget — EcoFlow RIVER 2#

256 Wh, 300 W continuous, 7.7 lbs, $239 ($0.93/Wh).

At 7.7 lbs this is the unit you carry without thinking about it, and for device-only camping it’s genuinely sufficient — 256 Wh is roughly a full weekend of phones, lights, and camera batteries. A 60-minute recharge is remarkable at the price.

Know its limit. The 300 W inverter will not run a compressor fridge, a kettle, or anything with a heating element. If a fridge is anywhere in your plans, skip to the 1 kWh class; nothing here bridges that gap.

When solar stops being optional#

Past two nights off-grid, panels change the arithmetic more than a bigger battery does.

A 200 W panel array returns roughly 600–800 Wh on a clear day — real-world, after accounting for angle, temperature derating, and the fact that peak sun lasts a few hours rather than all day. Treat the panel’s rated wattage as a best case you’ll rarely hit; 60–70% of rating over a good day is a fair planning figure.

That means 200 W of panels roughly covers the 494 Wh/day van-weekend load indefinitely in summer sun. It does not cover it in a forest, in shoulder season, or under cloud. Solar extends your trip; it doesn’t guarantee it.

Match panels to your unit’s maximum solar input — 400 W on the Jackery, 500 W on the DELTA 3, 600 W on the Anker. Exceeding it wastes money; the charge controller simply caps.

What can you actually run at a campsite?#

Capacity decides how long; the inverter decides what at all. This is where the 300 Wh class stops and the 1 kWh class starts:

Note how little energy the big loads actually consume — a kettle is 1,200 W but only for two minutes. The problem is never capacity with cooking appliances, it’s the inverter’s continuous rating. If you want to boil water, you need a 1,500 W+ inverter, which means the 1 kWh class or above regardless of how few watt-hours you use.

The honest advice for most campers: cook on gas and use the battery for electronics. A camp stove does in three minutes what costs you a quarter of your battery.

What we’d skip#

Anything with NMC chemistry. The Goal Zero Yeti 1000X is well-built and rugged, but at $1.32/Wh with older cells and a 9-hour wall recharge, it’s outclassed by everything above for camping.

A 2 kWh unit for tent camping. The BLUETTI AC200L and EcoFlow DELTA 2 Max are excellent, but at 62.4 and 50 lbs they’re car-camping and RV items. Buying one for a tent site means it stays in the trunk.

Gas generators, unless you genuinely need to run an air conditioner. They’re loud enough to annoy every neighbouring site, banned in a growing number of campgrounds, and can’t run inside a van.

How do you keep it charged at camp?#

Three options, and most people should plan for two of them.

Charge before you leave. Obvious, but the recharge times differ enough to change trip planning. The DELTA 3 goes wall-to-full in 56 minutes, the Anker SOLIX C1000 in 58, the Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 in 100. If you’re leaving in an hour, only some of these are ready.

Charge from the vehicle. Every unit here accepts 12V input from a car socket, but it’s slow — a typical cigarette-lighter socket delivers about 100 W, so filling a 1 kWh unit takes ten hours of driving. Treat it as topping up, not charging. Units supporting alternator charging (via a dedicated DC-DC charger) do far better, and that’s worth checking if you drive between sites.

The practical pattern for a multi-night trip is: leave fully charged, run a panel during the day, and use the drive between sites as a bonus top-up. Any one of the three alone tends to disappoint.
