Hurricane Season Power Checklist: What to Do in June, at the Watch, and After Landfall

Hurricane preparation has a strange economics: everything is cheap and available in June and sold out or price-gouged at the watch. This checklist sorts the power side of preparedness by when — what to do at the start of the season (June 1 to November 30 in the Atlantic), at the 48-hour watch, at the 36-hour warning, during the outage, and in the days after, which are statistically the most dangerous part. June: decide, buy, and test — while it’s all boring#

Size the battery for a multi-day outage. Plan solar for after the storm, not during it. A 400 W array returns roughly 1,200–1,600 Wh on a clear day — but close to nothing under a storm system. The honest model: battery capacity rides out landfall and the first grey day; panels earn their keep in the clear days that follow, when the grid is still down but the sky isn’t.

Buy the boring accessories now. Heavy-gauge (12 AWG) extension cords long enough to reach the fridge, a power strip, two fridge thermometers, rechargeable lanterns and headlamps, and a car-outlet charging cable for the station. This is the stuff that vanishes from shelves first.

At the watch: 48 hours out#

A hurricane watch means storm conditions are possible within 48 hours. This is the last calm window.

  • Charge everything to 100% — the power station, phones, laptops, USB banks, headlamps, the car (a full tank is also a ~100 W generator via its 12V outlet). Modern LiFePO4 units fast-charge from empty in one to two hours, so there is no excuse for a partial battery at landfall.
  • Freeze water bottles to pack every gap in the freezer. A full freezer holds safe temperatures for about 48 hours unopened — double a half-full one — and the bottles become drinking water as they thaw.
  • Re-test the fridge on the station for ten minutes. Finding a problem now beats finding it at hour one of the outage.

At the warning: 36 hours out#

A warning means storm conditions are expected. Final moves:

  • Fridge and freezer to their coldest settings. Every degree colder is minutes of safe time later; put a thermometer inside each compartment.
  • Top up the station to replace the test run’s draw.
  • Set phones to low-power mode and park them on chargers until the grid drops.
  • Get cash — card terminals and ATMs die with the grid, and the stores that reopen first after landfall are frequently cash-only for days.

During the outage: spend watt-hours like money#

The priority order from our outage guide applies verbatim: medical loads first, the fridge second, communications third, lights fourth, and nothing with a heating element — a 1,500 W kettle would empty a 1 kWh battery in about 34 minutes of use. Duty-cycle the fridge against its 4-hour unopened safe window (about two hours powered, one to two off) and leave the freezer closed entirely. Check the thermometers, not the door.

After landfall: the dangerous part#

More people die of carbon monoxide poisoning in the days after a hurricane than in most storms themselves — generators run around the clock, and someone pulls one into a garage out of the rain. The rules are absolute: outdoors, at least 20 feet from the house, exhaust away from every opening, never in a garage or under an awning. Renters and apartment dwellers run this checklist with one line deleted and one added. Deleted: everything about generators — there is nowhere legal or safe to run one on a balcony, and building codes agree. That makes the battery not one option among two but the entire plan, and it changes the sizing logic: with no recharge engine available, capacity and solar input are all you have, and a south-facing balcony or windowsill panel — even a 100 W folding one returning maybe 300–400 Wh on a clear day — is worth far more than it would be to a homeowner with a generator in the garage.

Added: the evacuation split. Apartment dwellers in surge zones are more likely to be told to leave, so weight portability when you buy — a 20-lb, 1 kWh-class unit rides out an evacuation in a trunk next to the go-bag, while a 60-lb unit effectively commits you to sheltering in place. Charge the unit, stage it by the door with its cables, and decide before the warning which scenario you’re equipping. Communications: the loads that punch above their weight#

Power planning during a hurricane is mostly about the fridge, but the loads that change outcomes are the small ones. The router draws about 15 W; keep it up as long as the ISP’s node survives, because outage maps, utility restoration estimates, and family check-ins all live behind it. When the node goes dark, phones fall back to cellular — set them to low-power mode and treat the power station’s USB ports as the household charging bar (a phone costs roughly 15 Wh per charge; even a nearly-spent 1 kWh unit holds dozens). A battery-powered or hand-crank NOAA weather radio belongs in the kit regardless: it’s the one receiver that works when both the ISP and the cell towers don’t, and it costs nothing from your watt-hour budget. When the grid comes back#

The checklist has a final stage that most kits skip, and it starts the moment the lights blink on:

  1. Verify the fridge and freezer thermometers before restocking. If the fridge log shows more than 2 hours above 40°F, the perishables go — “when in doubt, throw it out” is the USDA’s phrasing, not ours.
  2. Recharge everything to 100% — the station, USB banks, headlamps — before the post-storm restoration period ends. Grids often flicker for days after landfall, and the second outage arrives with your kit half-spent unless you refill during the gaps.
  3. Write down what actually happened: how many watt-hours the outage consumed, which device you missed, which cable didn’t reach. Run the real numbers through the calculator while they’re fresh — that log is next season’s shopping list, and it’s how a kit gets better instead of just older.
  4. Restock the consumables — batteries, shelf-stable food, the water you drank — while stores are calm again.
